Agriculture Microbiology Department
Department Overview
The Department of Microbiology was initially established within the organizational structure of the Faculty of Agriculture as a branch of the Department of Agricultural Botany, which also included two other branches: Plant Pathology and Genetics.
In 1997, Dr. Mazhar El-Essawy was the first to be appointed as a demonstrator in the newly established Microbiology branch, laying the foundation for the department. He was responsible for practical teaching, assisted by several professors seconded from other universities.
A few years later, Dr. Sabry Younes Mohamed, from the National Research Centre, joined the university following a recruitment announcement and was appointed as a lecturer in Microbiology within the Department of Agricultural Botany.
In 2009, the Department of Microbiology became an independent department, separate from the Department of Agricultural Botany.
Dr. Mazhar El-Essawy was the first member of the department to obtain a Ph.D., through a government-funded overseas scholarship to the Federal Republic of Germany, specializing in bacteriophages.
The department has diverse research and environmental interests related to environmental pollution, biofertilizers, genetic engineering, and the use of microorganisms in food and dairy products.
Department Vision
The Department of Agricultural Microbiology aspires to develop students’ scientific and technical skills and provide them with individualized training in all the fundamental skills of microbiology.
Department Mission
1. Developing Students’ Scientific and Technical Skills
Provide individual training in essential microbiological techniques and ensure laboratory access throughout the academic week.
Promote self-directed learning through scientifically structured research assignments.
Develop students’ presentation skills through seminars and PowerPoint presentations.
2. Community Engagement
Collaborate with civil society and external organizations to raise students’ awareness of environmental and public health issues, including wastewater pollution, agricultural reuse, and infectious diseases affecting humans and animals.
Encourage the use of specialized online platforms for scientific communication and knowledge exchange.
Organize scientific field visits to dairy and food-processing factories and wastewater reuse facilities to familiarize students with practical applications and real-world challenges.
Department Objectives
Understand microorganisms and their roles in humans, animals, and plants.
Develop practical skills in microbial handling, identification, and cultivation.
Use beneficial microorganisms as safe, cost-effective alternatives to chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
Apply microbiology in antibiotic and vaccine production, food processing, preservation, and probiotics.
Promote safe wastewater reuse and environmental pollution control.
Study infectious diseases, food spoilage, and microbial toxins and methods of prevention.
Apply laboratory and commercial microbial technologies to serve society.
