Plant Protection Department

Plant Protection Department

Department Overview

Plant Protection is a major branch of agricultural science, comprising three main disciplines: Entomology, Pesticide Science, and Agricultural Zoology.
The Department focuses on the study and management of agricultural pests, including insects, mites, nematodes, rodents, fungi, bacteria, weeds, and snails. Its areas of specialization include insect biology and ecology, medical and veterinary insects, stored-grain pests, biological control, beekeeping, pesticide evaluation and resistance, pesticide toxicity, and environmental contamination. Agricultural Zoology covers general agricultural zoology, acarology, and nematology.
The Department’s qualified faculty members teach undergraduate and postgraduate students and conduct research in collaboration with national and international research institutions. Undergraduate students also receive practical training at the Faculty’s farm near the Department building.

Department Vision

The Department aspires to provide distinguished university education in Plant Protection, particularly in Economic Entomology and Pesticide Science, and to graduate students equipped with the technical skills needed to address major agricultural pest problems affecting crop production. It seeks to supply the local community with qualified specialists capable of competing in the labor market through the continuous review and development of study plans and the sustainable implementation of performance evaluation and quality assurance systems in education and research.

Department Mission

In alignment with the mission of Sohag University and the Faculty of Agriculture, the Department is committed to developing educational programs that support agricultural community development and foster scientific excellence in Economic Entomology and Pesticide Science. It aims to prepare qualified graduates and researchers capable of contributing to local community and agricultural sector development through scientific methods and modern technologies that enhance agricultural productivity in both quantity and quality while preserving environmental safety.

Department Objectives

The Plant Protection Department aims to:

  • Provide high-quality education for undergraduate and postgraduate students, equipping them with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to excel in plant protection, agricultural research, and professional practice.

  • Continuously develop academic programs and enhance the expertise of professionals working in agricultural production, scientific research, community service, and environmental protection.

  • Strengthen scientific and cultural cooperation with relevant agricultural institutions and provide training, consultancy, and practical solutions to agricultural pest problems.

  • Conduct scientific research to address agricultural pest challenges, with particular emphasis on beneficial insects, including honeybees, parasitoids, and insect predators.

  • Establish an insect museum to support teaching, improve students’ knowledge, and help identify agricultural pests.

  • Develop specialized laboratories for studying, rearing, and multiplying biological control agents as alternatives to chemical pesticides, reducing their harmful effects on the environment and human and animal health.

  • Prepare awareness materials to educate farmers about potential agricultural pests, prevention methods, and the health and environmental risks of chemical pesticides, including harm to natural enemies and the development of pesticide resistance.

  • Enrich the Department’s library with textbooks, academic references, postgraduate theses, undergraduate research projects, scientific journals, newsletters, and posters to support teaching and research.
